STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA R21-18 COUNTY OF JACKSON

RESOLUTION DECLARING JACKSON COUNTY TO BE A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS PROTECTION COUNTY

WHEREAS, it is recognized that the Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the land; and

WHEREAS, the first ten amendments to the Constitution, known as the “Bill of Rights,” were adopted to preserve an individual’s rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, rights to peaceably assemble, rights to due process under the law and “A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, and the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed”; and

WHEREAS, seventeen other amendments were later adopted; and

WHEREAS, in present and past times the Constitution has been and is under pressure and attack from foreign and domestic entities; and

WHEREAS, Jackson County residents have approached the Jackson County Board of Commissioners and requested that they Resolve to protect the citizens’ rights afforded by the Second Amendment to the Constitution; and

WHEREAS, members of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners have taken an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners led the efforts to raise funds to establish what is now called “Freedom Park” and to install full-size replicas of the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights at Freedom Park so that all citizens can read and learn about these Founding Documents; and

WHEREAS, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners wishes to express its deep commitment to protecting all Constitutional rights of Jackson County citizens and are in opposition of any proposed law that infringes upon an individual’s constitutional rights.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Jackson County Board of Commissioners calls upon the North Carolina General Assembly and the United States Congress to use all their powers and authority to protect our citizens’ freedom under the Constitution.

Adopted this the 1′ day of June, 2021.
