“You don’t have to worry about it, it’ll never happen here.” A bit of irony used as a word of caution in Commissioner Read’s speech at the Rutherford County Commission meeting on February 13th, 2020. In a room that was filled to capacity, with a crowd of Second Amendment supporters looking on, Commissioner Read delivered his speech about the reasons why the citizens of Rutherford County sought to make Rutherford County, Tennessee a Second Amendment Sanctuary.
One theme of the speech was the idea that you never really think something bad is going to happen, until it does. He referenced a member of the audience, Mr. Louie, who was in New York on 9/11 and whose wife suffers from asthma as a result. One would never expect something so horrific to happen, but it did. Bad things can happen, even if you make the mistake of assuming that they won’t. Mr. Louie moved his family to Tennessee because of some of the overzealous laws being put in place in that state.
This New Yorker brought with him a warning for Second Amendment supporters in Tennessee that you shouldn’t mistakenly assume that your rights can’t be taken away from you in your state. If you’ve been paying attention to Second Amendment related news, you’d know that it has been happening in states all across the country and it will happen in yours as well if you do not remain vigilant.
Falling back on sayings like, “you don’t have to worry about it, it’ll never happen here,” can lead to a false sense of security. Do not be complacent and oblivious while the political landscape is shaped by tyrants so as to remove your rights from you. Remember what happened in Virginia. You need to operate on the assumption that bad things can happen to your Second Amendment rights and that you must actively oppose such changes at every level, even within your own county.
After Commissioner Read’s speech, the Commission unanimously passed the resolution to thunderous applause from the citizens of Rutherford County who came out to support the effort. Rutherford County is now a Second Amendment Sanctuary County.
