Standing-room-only crowds in Pasquotank and Camden watched Monday night as boards of commissioners in both counties approved resolutions supporting a citizen’s right to bear arms under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
In Pasquotank, almost a dozen county residents voiced public support for the resolution, which states in part that the right to keep and bear arms is under attack and that the commission board “stands opposed to any law, regulation or other act that would unconstitutionally infringe on the citizen’s Second Amendment rights.”
Only one citizen spoke in opposition to the resolution before commissioners approved it on a 6-1 vote. Commissioners Jeff Dixon, Charles Jordan, Barry Overman, Lloyd Griffin, Frankie Meads and Sean Lavin all supported the resolution. Commissioner Cecil Perry cast the lone “no” vote.
In Camden, the Board of Commissioners’ vote was unanimous.
Both resolutions differ from those adopted by some counties in the state, and across the country, where officials have declared their county a Second Amendment “sanctuary.” A sanctuary county is one that has adopted resolutions to prohibit or impede enforcement of gun-control measures perceived to violate the Second Amendment.
Griffin, who said he is a gun owner, encouraged Pasquotank residents in attendance at Monday’s meeting to contact state and federal “politicians” and voice their support for Second Amendment rights.
“The Board of Commissioners is listening to you,” Griffin said. “We can support this here today, support your wishes. However, once it goes to Raleigh or it goes to (Washington) D.C., things can change. We are seeing that, we heard that tonight.”
