Resolution of the Board of Supervisors of Brunswick County
In Support of Second Amendment Rights
WHEREAS, We The Brunswick County Board of Supervisors support the constitutional right of our citizens to keep, and bear arms in the County of Brunswick in accordance with the Constitution of The United States and Constitution of Virginia. We believe that our citizens shall have the right to defend their life, limb and property; and,
WHEREAS, Article 1, Section 13, of the Constitution of Virginia provides “that a well-regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free state, therefore, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; that standing armies, in time of peace, 4 should be avoided as dangerous to liberty; and that in all cases the military should be under strict subordination to, and governed by, the civil power;” and;
WHEREAS, the Brunswick County Board of Supervisors wishes to express opposition to any law that would unconstitutionally restrict the rights of our citizens under the Second Amendment to keep and bear arms, including its power to not appropriate public funds to violate such rights and its recognition of citizens’ right to petition the government for redress of grievances.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, The County of Brunswick Board of Supervisors wishes to express its intent to stand as a Sanctuary County for Second Amendment rights and that public funds of the County not be used to unlawfully restrict Second Amendment rights, and to oppose, within the limits of the Constitutions of the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia, any efforts to unconstitutionally restrict such rights, and to recognize and support the right of County citizens to petition the government for redress of grievances.
